Dr. Ramu Palaniappan


Dr Ramu completed his medical education at the prestigious Stanley Medical College, Chennai (India) in 1993 and his housemanship training at Stanley Hospital in the following year.

There, he held the position of Senior House Officer in the Orthopaedics and Paediatric Surgery Department. In 1996, he enrolled in a Masters of Surgery Programme at Madurai Medical College and successfully concluded his training in 1999. He went on to obtain his Fellowship in November of the same year in the United Kingdom.

He worked for two years in various hospitals, including the renowned Royal Liverpool University Hospital while in the U.K., before returning to Malaysia in September 2001.

Here, he received his posting to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah and joined as a Surgeon in November 2001. He was gazetted as a Surgeon in May 2002. As a result of his keen interest in laparoscopic surgery, his first attachment was to the prestigious GEM hospital in India in 2003 where he gained experience in Advanced Laparoscopic Surgeries. Notwithstanding this, he attended further training including Laparoscopic Hernia workshops in Malaysia to acquire valuable understanding in Laparoscopic Hernia Surgeries. He holds the honour of being the first person to perform Laparoscopic Incisional Hernia repair in Kota Kinabalu in 2006.

Upon earning his Laparoscopic Colorectal Fellowship in Vietnam in 2012, the service was made available to patients at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, one which continues to the present day.

Dr Ramu performs high-end laparoscopic procedures for all kinds of hernia (including umbilical and incisional), Gall Bladder diseases, benign and malignant Large Bowel diseases, Splenectomy, benign and malignant Stomach diseases, Gastro-Esophageal reflux diseases, and last but not least, Weight Reduction surgery (Sleeve Gastrectomy). He also provides treatment for the entire spectrum of general surgical diseases and performs operative procedures relating to the thyroid and salivary glands, breasts, abdominal wall hernia, skin and subcutaneous skin lesions, together with surgery for Piles (Stapler Haemorrhoidectomy and Laser surgery).

His routine work also involves diagnostic and therapeutic Gastro-intestinal endoscopy including OGDS, Colonoscopy and ERCP.

Dr Ramu lectures to Medical Students from University Malaysia Sabah since its inception and is one of the invited examiners for their Professional exams.

He is married with two children. His hobbies include running marathons and practicing yoga.
